white fuzzy growth on lawn #342796

Asked July 14, 2016, 9:35 AM EDT

In the past month patches of a white, fuzzy growth have appeared on my lawn. They appear in the morning, usually a damp and warm morning, and the growth disappears when direct sun reaches it. However, it seems to kill the grass, turning the blades brown. I have attached a picture of this morning's outbreak. Do you know what it could be? Do you know how I can prevent it?

Expert Response

What you are seeing is the mycelium of a common turf disease called brown patch. it is caused by a fungus and associated with high temperatures and humidity. It is not a killing disease, in that, the turf will recover when conditions get cooler and the atmosphere gets drier. We do not recommend fungicides for homeowners to control the disease. Do not apply nitrogen and restrict watering your lawn while the disease is active. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/brown-patch-lawns
