yellow plums and preservation #342613

Asked July 13, 2016, 4:42 PM EDT

We have some property that has unidentifiable fruit trees, some apple, and plums but we don't know what kind. How can I pit small ripe yellow plums to dry or can?

Expert Response

IF you are able to bring in some plums and leaves or take a photo and send it through ask-an-expert on line,  our Master Gardeners could identify them.

Plums are notorious for clinging to the pits.  It's necessary to cut them off in chunks.  You might also think about a steam juicer, or cooking them whole and then running through a jelly bag, for the juice.  It would make great jelly or syrup.
