Losing foliage bottom of pyramidal arborvitae #340832

Asked July 08, 2016, 2:38 PM EDT

Hello - I have a group of pyramidal arborvitae, surrounding a patio, that are losing foliage at their bases, during the winter. What is causing this and is there a way to prevent it? See attached photos. Thank you for your help with this. Roxanne

Expert Response

Here are two possibilities: animal damage (deer or rabbits) or salt damage (do you put salt on your patio in the winter?)

Rabbit damage is characterized by a clean 45 degree cut on branches. Deer do more tearing.
