Single-stem Rhubarb #338669

Asked July 02, 2016, 10:13 AM EDT

Can you identify a rhubarb-like plant where the stalks grow from a single tall stem? Its crown does not flower but just produces more stalks as it grows taller. I have photos but don't see an icon on your site to upload. Thank you.

Thank you for the question.  The plant might be common burdock.  Compare to this:

There are no burrs on this plant, and it doesn't flower. The stalks are skinnier than rhubarb, and greener. I'm resending the photos, if that will help. Thank you.

Thanks for the photos.  I checked with our Expert panel and we all feel this is probably burdock and have no other suggestions for you.  As another Expert has written:  "Burdock has an upright stem in its second year when it flowers. It’s biennial--no upright stalk and no flowers the first year. The plant in the photo submitted resembles the one identified as burdock but the lower stem in the original photo is atypical. If the plant is burdock, which I think is a good guess, I wonder if the lower leaves were somehow removed earlier this season and the small ones are replacing them".

A few other photos for you to compare:

Thank you for your interest in identifying this for me. I'll assume that it's burdock.
