Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) #337740

I am on the landscape committee in a town home association in Woodbury. We just became aware of the MN DNR three-year phase-out of Japanese barberry in MN. I looked at both the DNR and MN Department of Agriculture webpages describing restricted cultivars.
1) Just to be sure about this--does this list restrict virtually all barberries that are sold in MN nurseries, including the dwarf varieties?
2) Should we be removing existing barberries (we only have dwarf varieties) from our landscape?

So far as we know, barberry varieties not prohibited will be allowed for sale. Adjustments to the prohibited list may be made when more information about their potential to spread is available. The following article describes this challenging process:
