Asked June 27, 2016, 8:31 PM EDT

I have these little bumps on several plants. On the leaves and on the stems, sometimes on the top and sometimes on the bottom of the leaf. they scrape off easily with your fingernail. What are they and how can I rid my plants of them

Expert Response

They look like a form of scale insect. During part of their life cycle, scale insects are mobile and tend to seek a host to attach to. Once they attach themselves to leaves, stems or trucks, they will form a hard shell over themselves for protection. Sometimes they can become so prolific on plant tissue resulting in the plant dying. The insect may be controlled with oil sprays such as neme oil or with a systemic pesticide such as Bayer Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed. Ortho makes a similar product. To confirm the identity of this insect, contact your local Extension office in Santa Fe County at 3229 Rodeo Rd., Santa Fe, NM. Phone<personal data hidden>
