I have this growing in my backyard. It has overtaken the hydrangea so I have cut it back. I don't want this much in the garden and I don't know what it is. Will I have to kill the plant or can I just till the ground and it will die. I don't mind having some in the garden if it's easy to control.

What you have there is Vinca major. It thrives in our climate, is very agressive and is a nuisance. Dig it up, bag it, do not compost it,do not till it, (it will only spread all the more, have no mercy. If you despair of the digging process, use an oil based herbicide. Here's a link to UC Davis' "Weed Report on Vinca major. http://wric.ucdavis.edu/information/natural%20areas/wr_V/Vinca.pdf
