rhubarb pest- little black bugs #336432

Asked June 26, 2016, 12:40 AM EDT

Just discovered huge numbers of tiny black insects, mostly on the undersides of otherwise healthy looking leaves. Smaller numbers on some stalks, but no apparent damage. What are they, and what can I do to reduce or eliminate them?

Can you please attach a photo so that we can attempt an identification, or bring some samples to the OSU Extension Service, located at 4077 SW Research Way in Corvallis. Live samples are fine - really an sample as long as it isn't squished.

Here photos of the culprits.  There seem to be 2 different insects- or insect life cycle stages.  Little black beetle-looking ones that are mostly sedentary,  and smaller, narrower knat-like winged ones.  Also, there are some tiny gray balls, eggs perhaps.

Thanks for your help.

These are both aphids, just two different forms - winged and wingless. There are many treatments for aphids on garden plants but one of the most effective, and least toxic, is insecticidal soap. Google "insecticidal soap" (for example http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/pesticide/hgic2771.html) for details but don't be tempted to use ordinary soap as it will damage the plants, use genuine insecticidal soap.

Jack and Chrissy-

Thanks for the helpful information and recommendation.  The plague has lessened.  We will keep a more watchful eye in the future and use an insecticide soap accordingly.
