Eggplant damage #335343

Asked June 22, 2016, 3:14 PM EDT

Hi, I have a question about a kind of Turkish eggplant. I started them indoors and planted them out about 6 weeks ago. I haven't grown them before so I don't know that much about what they are supposed to look like, but it seems that their leaves are getting eaten by something. I can't identify any particular pest that might be doing this. Sometimes the holes in the leaves are large perforations (a centimeter or more) and other times they are getting eaten from the edges in. There are two photos of the kind of damage I have seen. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Expert Response

The most common pest of eggplant is flea beetles, which chew holes in the leaves.  But we assume you would see the flea beetles if they were there.  Since you do not see any pest on the leaves, it is likely that the culprit is slugs which come out at night.

Here is our website's Grow It Eat It section devoted to insect pests. Take at look at the slug information (and flea beetles, if you find any): http://extension.umd.edu/growit/insect-pests-vegetables
