Birch Tree losing small branches #334958

I have a beautiful, healthy appearing birch tree in my yard. A few weeks ago the tree started to drop small leafed branches. The branches are all similar in size (1/8 to 3/16) at break point which seems to be the attachment point to the larger branch. It appears as if the branches were torn off. Looking into the tree I can see small patches of newly dead leaves on the same size small branches ready to come off. Location is Lake Huron area of Ontario Canada

Expert Response
I'm not sure what kind of birch you have, but river birch are known for dropping branches throughout the growing season. Squirrels often contribute to the shower of small branches throughout the summer as well. If the branches appear to be torn or shredded on the ends, this may be your answer.
If you can identify the species of birch you have or send pictures of the actual tree we might be able to give you more information about this problem.
