Nodules on shrub #333651

Asked June 18, 2016, 10:42 AM EDT

We have a tree/shrub that has some nodules on the underside of some leaves. Can you help identify it? Thanks

Polk County Iowa

Expert Response

The "nodules" on the leaf are galls. Galls are abnormal growths of plant tissue induced to form by mites, insects, or other small organisms. They are quite common on trees and shrubs. While galls may be unsightly, they do not cause serious harm to healthy plants. Preventive insecticide treatments are seldom warranted.

See the following publication for additional information on galls.
