Mature oak with seeping patches on trunk #332940

Asked June 16, 2016, 11:35 AM EDT

I have a mature black/red oak that recently developed several dark seeping patches in the bark on the main trunk. I have attached a couple of pictures. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I can do to treat it or to keep it from spreading to other nearby trees?

This is probably bacterial wetwood:

It is mostly cosmetic. And in any case, there is not much you can do. It won't spread from tree to tree.

If the overall health of the tree is compromised (e.g., dropping leaves), then you might want to call an arborist.
