apple problem #332328

Asked June 14, 2016, 1:53 PM EDT

HI I was wondering if you could help me solve a problem with my apple trees? The fruit is drying up on the trees, and the apples that remain have many brown spots that go deeper then just the skin. I will sent some pictures. Thank You Dwight Ferguson <personal data hidden> 320 Mckenney st St Croix Falls,WI 54024 Thank you

Expert Response

These marks are typical of leafroller chewing and the puncture holes by plum curculio and plant bug.  See the attached labeled picture.   It is a bit unusual to see these many puncture holes.  With only a few puncture wounds the fruit will stick on the tree, but with this many, the fruit will often drop.
Plum curculio is most actively causing problems for the first month after petal fall.  There are various leaf rollers that gnaw on leaves and fruit
