Spots on squash #328642

Asked June 04, 2016, 1:58 PM EDT

What could be causing these spots on my young squash near the flower? And these aphid like bugs multiplied after spraying with lemon dawn and water solution.

Expert Response

The spots could have been caused by the lemon dawn application burning the young squash, especially if the soap concentration is high and/or if the soap solution was sprayed onto the young squash on a very sunny and hot day (my possible answer without seeing the young squash). The small black insects are thrips which feed on flowers.

I didn't spray the plants until I discovered the spots and bugs. How do I get rid of the thripes? We've had a lot of rain lately. I've been told squash do not like excessive amounts of water. I do not know if that is true.
