bugs on black eyed susan vines? #328490

Asked June 03, 2016, 10:19 PM EDT

I purchased some black eyed susan vines a couple weeks ago and something is eating the leaves. I need to know who's doing it and/or what I can use to get rid of them. I have attached a couple pictures of the leaves. Thank you for your prompt reply. Kathie

Expert Response

Hi Kathie,

It is unlikely that I will be able to positively identify what is causing the damage without having an insect to identify or without seeing the damage close-up.  There are several insects that can cause this type of damage (leaf chewers).  Are you seeing any feeding activity during the day?  If not I would first suspect slug damage. Go out at night with a flashlight and see if you find any slugs. If so, here is some suggested management: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7427.html  If your are able to bring a sample into our plant clinic we may be able to further assist you and then suggest management.  The plant clinic is located on the fairgrounds in Redmond near parking lot D, M-F from 9-5.

Thanks,  Amy Jo
