To get the best blooms from Kalanchoe Calandivas I've read to use a fertilizer for blooming houseplants. Would African Violet fertilizer work well?

It should work.
The UMN recommendation for all fertilizer applications.....go with half the strength. For example, if the recommendation on the bottle/package says "one tablespoon per gallon of water" then go with 1/2 tablespoon per gallon.
Fertilize houseplants only during the growing season.
