Insect damage to annual leaves #327240

Asked May 31, 2016, 5:50 PM EDT

Help - my red salvia and zinnia leaves are full of holes.  Most of them are still blooming but what is a safe product to spray on them?  The insects don't seem to be touching my perennials and tomatoes.

Expert Response

This appears to be slug damage.  Have you seen any silvery slime trails on the damaged leaves or on the ground near the plants?  Slugs are only active at night so in order to see them you should visit your garden at night with a flashlight.

Have you seen any insects actively chewing your plants?

Slugs can be controlled with traps or with child/pet safe bait.
