If water hemlock is suspected of starting to grow on my property is there a program to help us identify and eradicate if necessary. We have livestock and special needs children!!!

Expert Response

Thanks fro reaching out to us about the plant you have at your place. The only way to make sure exactly what the plant in question is, would be for us to send off a sample. If possible you could bring in as much of one plant as possible to our office 2449 Princess Anne Rd, Building 14, Virginia Beach, VA 23456, we have a Help desk that is manned from 9a.m.-3p.m. or just leave with one of our administration assistants and we can get it identified and recommend control measures. From a quick extension search of the picture it appears the plant is possibly water hemlock (cicuta douglasii) ans not the poison hemlock (conium maculatum)  From a program to control, I am not aware of any program that will assist with more than the proper identification and recommendations for control.http://ccrm.vims.edu/publications/wetlands_technical_reports/01-11-Water-Hemlock.pdf

If you are able to get us a sample of we can be of further assistance, just let me know.

Foliage; the leaf on the right is from poison hemlock (Conium maculatum), and the leaf on the left is from western water hemlock (Cicuta douglasii).

I'm not touching that plant to bring a sample in.  Please just tell me how to get rid of it.  It is just as dangerous as poison hemlock.

If you go to this link and scroll down to the management section, it spells out mechanical, biological, and chemical control of poison hemlock.
