small red fruits #323838

Asked May 22, 2016, 7:38 AM EDT

When i was out walking i found these trees on the footpath. They had hardish leaves, hard green fruit in bunches of 4- 6 and these 2 bright red ones. There were non on the ground under the tree.when touched they fell off very easily. I took the home and cut them open. They had soft cream ccoloured flesh around a large droplet shaped seed. The flesh tasted like nothing really and was the texture of soft floury apple. I didn't swallow the fruit as i didn't know what it was.

The tree is growing on the footpath in Cairns Australia.  I don't know if it is native to Australia as it has been planted by sonone at Council gardens. The trees are all about 3-4 meters tall and don't seem to have been pruned.  I don't know how old they are as i am only a visitor. Their leaves are quite hard.

This is Ochrosia elliptica, known as elliptic yellowwood or kopsia. You will find information online about it. The fruit is not considered edible, and it is native to part of Australia.
