First two pictures show how the leaves come out of the stem strangely. Third picture, heart shaped leaf, plant grows in a clump. Thank you very much!

Expert Response

I am working on your question about the ID of these the plants.

I could use some better pictures. Would you please send pictures of the plants growing in the garden, the roots and any flowers that may have emerged? It would help too if you photographed the plants laid against a light colored surface so I can see the form of the plant better.

I see that you sent your question in again today. I have deleted the second question to avoid duplication of effort.
Hi, Since I hadn´t heard back from anyone, I resent the questions today, but I divided the questions into two different questions because they involved two different plants.  I know you deleted one of the questions I sent today, but I don´t know which one.  It doesn´t matter.  In my first question to you, included above, the first two pictures are this strange plant where the thin leaves emerge almost wrapped around the stem.  I´m sure the way the leaves join the stem is diagnostic.  I don´t have any more examples of that plant to show you.

For the second plant, the one with the heart-shaped leaves, I took three more pictures of the plant in the garden. Two show the leaves, and the third shows how the plant grows out of the ground.  If you need me to pull it up, I will.  Just let me know.

Thank you for helping me!  I hope you can help me identify both plants.  I just noticed you asked for them to be photographed against a light colored surface.  Sorry I didn´t do that, but I will if you need me to.  Thanks for your help!

Linda

Thanks for the additional photos!

The plant in the latest photos appears to be a Helianthus (perennial sunflower). One determining factor is the lower leaves grow opposite of each other on the stem while the upper, newer leaves alternate on the stem.

Re: your other mystery plant - I am still searching. I believe it is a weedy plant and could be removed. Just having trouble coming up with a conclusive answer for you!
