Expert Response

Hello,

It is difficult to tell for sure without seeing a sample or specimen, because there are many characteristics that contribute to mushroom identification, and some of those characters are microscopic. The habitat is also helpful, whether they are under certain types of trees. Mushrooms and fungi are decomposers in our ecosystems, and there may have been a tree in that location and the fungi are decomposing the wood and roots. To identify we would need to know if it has dark or light colored spores and if it is in the gilled mushrooms.
I recommend that you never eat anything you collect in the wild unless you have it identified in person by an expert. I would not consider these edible. You could take a sample to your local Agriculture or University office. They are mostly water and will go away, or you could lightly rake them to break up.
