Saving a dogwood tree #323015

Asked May 19, 2016, 11:44 AM EDT

My two boys stripped a lot of bark from a fairly mature dogwood tree. Is the tree doomed or is there anything I can do to try and fix it. Thank you. Rebecca McGee

Expert Response

The damage to the tree is extensive, but I cannot tell from the pictures if the tree is completely girdled. Complete girdling (the bark removed from a band completely encircling the tree) will certainly kill the tree. The following Extension website offers this information: "When a tree has been damaged by removing a ring of bark, the tree may die depending on how completely it was girdled. Removal of even a vertical strip of bark less than one-fourth the circumference of the tree will harm the tree, but not kill the tree. When the patch of bark is one-half or greater, the chances of tree death increase." The site offers information on "repair grafting" and explains how girdling kills a tree.

If the tree is not completely girdled, give the tree plenty of water during dry spells and watch to see if it survives the summer.
