Weed or flower #322342

Asked May 17, 2016, 10:09 AM EDT

I would like to identify this plant. Have moved into a house that had a master Gardener and did not want to pull it up if it is not a weed. Thank you

I'm almost sure it is not a weed, but without a flower it is almost impossible to ID most plants.  It does look a lot like Stoke's aster, which does spread like this plant seems to be doing.  It also looks like a flower head may be forming.  If it comes out purplish blue, then it likely is a Stoke's aster.  If not, then wait till it flowers and ask again.  So many flowers have basel rosettes like this one, it could be a verbena, or a guara.

The unknown plant  is some type of Oenothera, or evening primrose.  There are 145 different types, so I don’t know which one.  The photo of the flower was not sharp enough to see if it had a cross-like stigma in the middle of the flower, so I had it verified today by the horticulturist at the JC Raulston Arboretum. I think it is a lovely plant.  I have included a link below that is a fun way to try and figure out plants based on categories.  For example, for this one you would select perennials, then on the next page select perennials again, select 1-3 ft., and select flower is yellow.  This narrows the field down a lot, and there is a picture for each one.  Oenothera is one of the possibilities.
