Showy Mountain Ash Problem #321830

Asked May 15, 2016, 4:03 PM EDT

Over the past 2-3 years, I have noticed what appears to be a rotten area on the lower trunk of our otherwise healthy Showy Mountain Ash. I am very concerned about the integrity of the tree and whether there is something I can do other than remove it. (The tree is about 15 years old.) I hope the pictures are helpful. Thank you. Expert Response

Hi,

It looks as though your tree's trunk has been damaged which can interfere with the tree's absorption of nutrients and moisture. If the area around the wound feels rotted/mushy, you might consider removing the tree (you don't want it falling!). If the area feels solid, you might just wait and see if the tree can withstand the effects of the wound.

Here is some info that I hope you find helpful: http://www.mortonarb.org/trees-plants/tree-and-plant-advice/horticulture-care/trunk-wounds-and-decay

Thank you for your inquiry and good luck! Replied May 15, 2016, 5:12 PM EDT
