Philodendron Leaves Turning Brown #321689

Asked May 15, 2016, 2:02 AM EDT

I have had three sprigs of philodendrons growing in a vase of water for a couple of years. They have thrived right beside a west window. Recently, a few leaves have yellowed. I removed them. Now, two leaves look like they are burned on one side, dark brown, almost black, drying up, and curling under. What do you think? Please advise.

The pictures look like overwatering or too much salt.

When watering make sure the plant does not sit in water for more than 30 minutes. I use a turkey baster to syringe out excess water from the pot plant saucer.

If indoor plants are not repotted every few years, salt from water and fertilizer builds up in the soils causing leaf burn like your plants are displaying.

Do you see white crusty materials around the bottom of the pot and on the surface of the soil? That is usually calcium from the water.

Repot house plants every 3 to 5 years or more frequently if your water has high salinity (salt content).

Wash all the old soil off the roots and repot in larger container with fresh new potting soil.
