1 year old lawn Turning White #321605

Asked May 14, 2016, 3:49 PM EDT

Happy Sunny Saturday,
I live in Wasilla near the hay flats.  I put in a hydromulch yard last year in the mid summer.  The lawn thrived very well and had no issues.  we had the greenest yard in the neighborhood.  I have always used scotts turf builder for my lawn food.  This year our yard was very green at the start of the year.  We put scotts starter fertilizer with weed control.  We recently mowed the yard for the first time.  Since the mow many of the blades are turning white??  We have been watering every other day and does not seem to be getting any better.  We used the started fertilizer because I had planned on over seeding this spring to even thicken the yard more.  What is my next step to get my yard back to where it was early this year.

Expert Response

I suspect you have a nutrient deficiency of phosphorus and/or potassium.  The Scotts lawn fertilizers have very little of each.  Your lawn looked great until it ran out of these nutrients.

Try applying 5 pounds/1,000 square feet of 8-32-16 fertilizer and let me know what it looks like in a month.  My direct email is <personal data hidden>.
