identify insect hive and a tree #321368

Asked May 13, 2016, 3:22 PM EDT

We have two hives that look like this in the eaves of our house. We see no activity around them. Who is building them? Are they better left alone or removed? If removing is recommended do you have suggestions of the best way? We do not want to use chemicals nor disturb honey bees. This tree is on our hill. Don't know if it was planted by previous owner or wild.. It is full of sweet smelling flowers right now which the bees are loving. We would love to know what it is. Thanks.

The first picture is the beginning of an aerial yellowjack nest. The 2nd photo looks like a paper wasp nest. Yellowjckets, Bald-Faced Hornets, and Paper Wasps This publication is from University of Idaho Extension. It will give you a lot of information regarding both insects.

Tree id is a bit more difficult from photos so I’m including a link to the Arbor Day Foundation on-line tree i.d. site. What Tree? It seems to be an easy site to navigate especially if you have a branch in front of you and thus can accurately answer the questions. Enjoy your detective work!
