Serviceberry and Red Bud not growing well #320946

Asked May 11, 2016, 10:37 PM EDT

Hi - we bought a Serviceberry and Red Bud in September 2012. They are both flowering in the springtime and are so beautiful. However, they both seem like they haven't grown at all since we planted them. The Red Bud especially seems very spindly and won't grow. I know that these trees do not get very big, but should they fill out at all? We wanted a smaller tree by the front of the house, but the Red Bud looks almost sickly because it's so skinny. My son is in the photos to give perspective to the size of the trees. He is hoping you can "Help Our Trees!!" The first photo is of the Red Bud.The second and third photos are of the Serviceberry. Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi,

I am hoping that your redbud is a Northern Strain; these have been developed to tolerate MN's winters. That said, the redbud is a medium grower so you shouldn't expect to get big very quickly. Here is some info:http://search.schultesgreenhouse.com/12070008/Plant/665/Northern_Strain_Redbud (note that this is not an endorsement of this vendor).

As for the serviceberry, it is also a medium grower. Here is info: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/serviceberry-juneberry/index.html

You might consider fertilizing the trees, so I am providing guidance from the U:http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/tree-fertilization-guide/
