Food Safe Buckets #320502

Asked May 10, 2016, 5:52 PM EDT

We have planted a tomato plant in a 5 gallon orange bucket from Home Depot. The number on it is a 2 surrounded by a triangle which indicates the type of plastic it is made of. That number is food safe if it is made from new materials and has no harmful items. However, we do not know what type of dye is used for the orange color nor do we know if it uses recycled material in the manufacture of this bucket, so we assume it is not food safe. I know the white buckets used for food are safe. I was wondering if we should transfer our 12 inch tomato plant in to a white bucket which states it is food safe. Would the tomatoes which do not come in to contact with the orange bucket pick up any harmful substances? I realize the roots might. However, I read that even if tomatoes are planted in soil with lead they do not pick up much of it. Please advise us.

The number 2 at the bottom of the bucket means that the container is recyclable. The use of lead paint has been banned since the 50,s.It would be safe to use these containers for growing your tomatoes.

I am wondering about this orange bucket because Home Depot said it was not food safe.  Also, I  read that the number 2 bucket could have been made out of recycled materials which may have included paint or other non safe materials as well as dye that was not food safe.  Do you feel that the tomato plant will not pick up any harmful substances?  Should I transfer the plant to a white food safe bucket?

Thanks,

We do not have the research on orange buckets and food safety.  When in doubt err on the side of caution.  You will have to decide.
