Asked May 08, 2016, 10:23 PM EDT

Hi OSU: Can you identify the attached plant? Thank you!

Jackson County Oregon

Expert Response

This beautiful flower looks like a Dahlia, maybe a variety called Christmas Star.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Hi Chris:

Thanks you and this isn't a Christmas Star Dahlia. I just checked. Is there another way to identify it from the picture?

Thanks again.

I am going to guess a gazania. Try using your search engine to look this plant up, then use "images" to search for ones similar to this. When you send a picture to identify, get in some foliage and buds too to help narrow it down.

Thanks for using Ask an Expert.

Thanks Sharon. Ganzia seems much closer than the first guess.

Here's some other pictures with more foliage. Are there any places online I can upload pictures that actually ID the plant that way? I have an app on my iphone that does this, but would be nice to know if there are places I can do this from my computer.

Thanks again!

Looking at the entire plant, I would say the leaf structure and the elongated buds fit the gazania.

I know of an app on the iphone for identifying plants based on a photo. I have personally not found it that accurate. However, I don't know of anything on the pc that works the same way.

Thanks for using ask an expert.

Thank you Sharon.

I've had accuracy so far with the "flower checker" iphone app. But only with 3 plants so far, so that isn't a lot to recommend for accuracy.

Thanks again for the ID!
Brian
