Do Burning Bush leaf out later than other shrubs? #318740

Asked May 04, 2016, 12:52 PM EDT

Now that it is May, and most of my other shrubs have leafed out (i.e. Sand Cherry, Winter Gem Boxwood), I don't know if the burning bushes that I planted last Spring are viable.  Is it normal for them to leaf out later than the other landscape bushes?  There are tiny buds that have appeared, but half of the branch is grey, the rest of the branches have an orange tint.  If they are doomed to die, I would rather remove them now because it is the optimal time to re-plant.

Secondly, do you ever see lilacs with the issue of only offering puny blooms on one side?  This bush is at least 10 years old and has been like this since the first bloom . Every year, I hoped that it would get better, but it never did. This side of the house is not full sun, but mostly sun throughout the afternoon.

Burning bushes leaf out later than many other bushes.  But comparing them to boxwood doesn't work.  Boxwood are a broadleaf evergreens and keep their leaves all year.  Be patient and wait.

The small lilac flowers are probably due to a lack of direct sunlight.  It's not that the it is light; there needs to be eight or more hours of direct, unbroken sun.  If there is a partial day, it obviously is not enough.  You may think that it is.  The lilac is disagreeing.
