Aerial insecticide spraying #317572

Asked April 30, 2016, 10:17 AM EDT

What are the laws concerning buffer zones around apiaries when conducting pesticide spraying from the air?  What can be done to protect our bees during this spraying?  We live in the Elkhorn community at Springville, TN. Also, what about wild bees and other pollinators? Would spraying at night help?

Expert Response

Tennessee's Department of Agriculture has an apiary registration program that benefits the honeybees in several ways. You can view that list at https://www.tn.gov/agriculture/article/ag-businesses-apiary-registration.

One benefit specifically states that registration of apiaries is 'E-mail and postal notification of aerial spraying of pesticides in your area when we are notified of the spraying projects'.

You can also view Tennessee's Pesticide Laws at https://ag.tennessee.edu/PSEP/Documents/EPP714.pdf. Another good place to pose some questions would be UT's Pesticide Safety Education Program, contact info below.
