A poisonous weed in our yard #317373

Asked April 29, 2016, 11:37 AM EDT

We don't have grass ground cover. One side of the front yard is mostly vinca the other half (separated by the side walk) has peonies violets and naturally occurring grass and of course dandelions. We have a vine that used to be on the retaining wall but is now spreading across this side of the yard. This vine has broad leaves a red stem that sends out roots as it moves across the yard. Invasive! I've been pulling it and gotten some poison on my skin with blisters that look like poison ivy. My husband and I have searched for this but cannot find it.Nothing looks like the photos we have of poison ivy.We do not want to use round up but what can we do? Can you recommend a solution? We have a cat and children who like to run around and play in our yard.

Expert Response

Would you be able to send a picture of the plant you are referring to? Was your skin reactive immediately after touching the plant? Thank you for the additional information.

Picture one looks like a Common Hop vine. Picture two has Wild Ginger in it. Picture three has Wild Ginger and Creeping Bellflower. None of these plants are poisonous but it definitely sounds like there is something you reacted to. There may be things in the picture that I am unable to see. You could take cuttings of what you believe you reacted to (with gloves on) and bring to a local greenhouse to see if they are able to identify.
