what is this tubular grass growing in my backyard? #314128

Asked April 17, 2016, 9:17 PM EDT

This started coming up early spring here in Upstate NY, around March. It is not Chives, I grow Chives in the garden. Does not smelly like garlic or onion. Smells faintly of corn/ corn silk. Grow in full sun and partial shade equally well. I do not recall it flowering at all last year. I would also like to know if is edible. Thank you for your consideration.

Based on your photos the plant may be wild garlic/onion.  They are the untamed 'cousins' of the garden variety of onion and garlic. Wild garlic has leaves that are smooth, round and hollow and the flower stalks are solid and stiff. See our Website for more information http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/wild-garlic
The weeds are edible but not as tasty as our garden variety and very strong flavors. If you eat them, make sure no chemicals were applied to your lawn or flower bed.
