Lilac bark is peeling #313890

Asked April 16, 2016, 6:13 PM EDT

Hi, I have some lilac trees all together in a little grove. This winter, I noticed that the bark on the main trunks are peeling off...curling like package ribbon as it peels. Some of them have it worse than others. I asked a tree trimmer guy about it...he said squirrels....I asked a guy at Gerten's......he said natural "molting" of the tree as it is maturing. I'm not sure it's either of those to be honest as the smaller ones are just starting to do it and I've never had this problem before and I've had this house since 2005 and these lilacs were here before I bought the house. They are starting to bloom so that is good. I have enclosed this link to get photos of the issue. http://brianharrell.com/lilac/ I would be most appreciative if you could tell me what you think the problem is and if/how it can be rectified. I love this little grove of lilacs and I really would be devastated if they had to be removed. Thank you for you help. Sincerely, Kathy~

Expert Response

Some bark shedding is natural with lilacs and some tree lilacs have a natural shaggy look. However, your photos show something more extreme happening. The damage looks consistent with squirrels, although other critters can attack young trees (deer, rabbits, voles, etc.)  You can try to discourage them by wrapping the trunks with wire mesh. Be sure to allow room for the tree to grow.  In any case there is not much you can do for the tree except keep it healthy by making sure it gets plenty of water.
