200+ year old silver maple #313516

Asked April 14, 2016, 11:00 PM EDT

I live in the city of Minnetonka, MN. The city has recently come up with a plan to redo the sewer and water main. In my front yard I have a silver maple which is approx. 9+ ft. thick (diameter) at 4 ft. up from the ground. Approx. 100 ft. tall. The sewer and water would be installed on the other side of the street, no need to remove the tree other than  proposed "curbs" which we have never had. I had some guys out from the U. some 30+ years ago when I bought the house. At that time they told me it was maybe the largest silver maple in the state. What can I do to stop the City of Minnetonka from cutting this wonderful tree down? Just to install a curb? Please, please HELP!! The neighbors have come over in tears with their support, the city board members are so arrogant.

I think you need to hire legal help to determine whether you have any options. You could ask an certified arborist to come and look at the situation and see if they would have some sort of recommendation for a compromise that will cause the least amount of damage to the tree during the installation of the curb and gutter. Here is a link to help you find a certified arborist if you would like to hire one to come and look at it. http://www.treesaregood.com/findanarborist/arboristsearch.aspx

Sherry,

Thank you for your response. Maybe I didn't state my request clearly enough. I have had multiple arborists look at the tree. They all told me the tree would be O.K. if the intrusion was done correctly. I am dealing with pig headed city politicians in arrogant Minnetonka . What I am looking for is the equivelant of the historical society who registers houses, but for other landmarks, including trees. Does such a thing exist? Please help, time is of the essence!

I am just a volunteer Master Gardener who answers questions online so this is not really in my area of expertise. This is what I could find. http://www.americanforests.org/bigtrees/tree-protection-toolkit/ . http://www.mnstac.org/treeordinances.html . I think you could try contacting the MN DNR to see if they could offer any ideas or help. I would try this contact person. Central Region
