Live Oak Disease? #313138
Asked April 13, 2016, 2:28 PM EDT
We purchased a home late last year in the Cypress, TX area. The Live Oak in the front yard appears to be diseased. Many large portions of the bark on the trunk have fallen off. The bark appears to have split on several branches. The tree appears to have a lot of lichen or moss growing on the bark.
Can the tree be saved, or should we replace it?

Expert Response
At this point, your tree seems to be in decline. The wounds on the trunk do not seem to be healing properly. It also looks like the tree was pruned improperly in picture 3 which may be leading to decay.
You may want to have a certified arborist take a look at the tree. He/she may be able to determine the amount of decay within the tree.
