Pest infestation in cedar fence boards? #312946

Asked April 12, 2016, 4:59 PM EDT

We built a new fence just under a year ago and noticed the other day that there's something that appears to be eating it. What could it be? Is there something we can spray to get rid of the pests to make sure they don't do more damage and spread to other fence planks? Thank you!

Expert Response

These are old galleries made by a wood-boring beetle, probably a long-horned beetle (Cerambycidae). The galleries were exposed when the wood was planed in the mill so the galleries were present when the wood was originally cut. The beetles are no longer present so no treatment is needed. Cedar is very resistant to attack by insects.
