Succulent Identification #311389

Asked April 05, 2016, 4:22 PM EDT

Hello, I have a succulent in my garden that I'd like help identifying. When I search online for it, it comes up as Euphorbia Myrsintes (Myrtle Spurge). I've read that this is considered an invasive plant, and some states have banned it. I also read that it can be dangerous to people, similar to poison ivy. Can you please help me out with this? If it is indeed this type of succulent, what is your recommendation on keeping it in my garden or getting rid of it? Thanks, Nicole

Expert Response

Hi Nicole.  The plant in the photograph is indeed Myrtle Spurge or Euphorbia myrsinites.  It is considered invasive in some of the western states with similar climates to here. I have seen it spread quite easily here in urban landscapes.  It is also known to cause some dermal and/oral toxicity from the milky white sap in the plant. I would not recommend this plant for use in a landscape based on its ability to spread quite easily and potential to be unsafe around children, pets, and cause skin irritation.

Here is a link to some other plants that may be used instead: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/deschutes/sites/default/files/xeri-all_1.pdf
