Ground Crustation Identification #311112

Asked April 04, 2016, 2:28 PM EDT

Please help identify this dark brow/black crust.  It is growing on the surface of the ground.  I believe it might be black soil lichen but I would like to have some confirmation or other possible identifications.  This was found in Southwest Washington State.  It is very firm and brakes apart when pulled.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

Expert Response

I to agree that it appears to be a lichen or fungus, however the pictures that I have are so dark, it is really hard to identify it. Please bring a sample into our office.  We are open Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - noon (address below)
