Rose Rosette Disease in Oregon? #309943
Asked March 29, 2016, 7:30 PM EDT
One of my rose bushes is growing strangely, with a proliferation of tiny stunted leaves. It looks like it could be the dreaded rose rosette disease, which is incurable, highly transmissible and has devastated rose gardens in other parts of the country. Do you know if RRD has been detected in Portland? This would obviously be a big deal in the City of Roses, which is why I'm looking for advice. The damaged bush is surrounded by five other rose bushes, one of which also shows symptoms. I took the liberty of attaching a couple of photos. Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

So no we have not detected it in the west yet. Send in a sample to the OSU Plant Clinic and I will take care of the charge. See here:

Note from another pathologist: It is my understanding
there was one find in a nursery years ago in California from plants from the
east. It is not in the landscape - they are probably seeing round-up
injury from last year.
Thank you, Jay! I'll mail you a sample of the rose this weekend.
Have you used Round-up or any other herbicide with glyphosate in it?
Hi Jay. I believe Round-up was used near that area about a year ago. Interestingly, there is another bush right next to the affected one that doesn't show damage.
In that case I do not think you need to send a sample. Only the buds or shoots that got inadvertently hit with roundup will show symptoms the next year. You might see it next year as well until it works it out of its system.
Hi Jay. Thanks again for your help with this question. It appears that this was, indeed, roundup damage and the rose bush seems to be recovering.
