2-3" mounds of dirt are appearing in my lawn. When I cut one open it conceals a 1/8" hole where something has emerged. See enclosed photos. What is it? How can I control it?

The mounds are from earthworm activity. This indicates you have a healthy lawn and the soil is moist. Please see this CSU Extension Garden Note which discusses earthworms in the lawn and some of the steps you can take to reduce lawn lumpiness as a result of their activity.

I suspect you'll see less activity as the soil dries out later this spring and summer. Lawns are pretty soggy right now from the recent snow and rain.
