Plant ID #309542

Asked March 28, 2016, 10:32 AM EDT

Yesterday afternoon as I was doing garden clean-up I can across this "plant".  Is this a weed or a dislodged flower from my garden?  I am perplexed and some gardening friends are also.  Thank you!

Expert Response

I think it is purple deadnettle (Lamium purpureum L), a common winter annual. Are the stem red and square?

I will check tomorrow in the day light.  I did have some stinging nettle that appeared during the summer in those rocks.  Where is it coming from?  Strange.  I will respond tomorrow when I can get a better look!  Thank you very much!

Purple deadnettle is an annual mint related to henbit another common winter annual weed. Sting nettle is in another family and it is a perennial.
