Worm mounds or ??? #306187
Asked March 10, 2016, 2:57 PM EST
I am finding these everywhere we had snow piled up in our yard. I live at 7500' msl in Colorado. If they are worms, they are taking out a lot of grass in my back yard.
These are areas that are devoid of sprinklers and that I do not fertilize or aerate. Just natural mountain grass that I mow.
In the front yard, I had voles/pocket gophers under the snow for the first time ever that left trails through the grass. The ground was frozen hard as concrete so they couldn't burrow through it.
I am wondering if I have worms or some other grub that is attracting the mammals and i also have crows that are digging holes. Lived here for 20 years and have never seen this before.

Expert Response
thank you for your question and the accompanying pictures. I am wondering if these are mounds from voles that have collapsed under the snow? It would be interesting
to see if you would find tunnels under the loose soil. Voles eat grasses, roots, bark etc. (see the attached link). the crows would take advantage of the loose soil and find
bugs, worms etc.
Please read the attached link from CSU. Let us know if you have further questions.
