How to distinguish between a Chinese versus Siberian elm? #300834

Asked February 12, 2016, 5:47 PM EST

I have a young tree in my yard.  I can't tell whether is it a Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) or a Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila).  I've attached photos of the trunk and leaves.

Hi,

Both species have leaves that are alternate, simple, elliptic, and about three inches long.  The bark is also similar between the two species.  If this tree has a parent tree nearby that you could photograph that might help since they both propagate by samara seed pods that float to the ground.  The mature trees differ in other ways such as brittleness, shape, and resistance to elm leaf beetles.

Hi again,

Would you be willing to bring a piece to my office for closer examination?  A small branch with leaves would probably suffice.  Flowers would be preferred if they are available. Thanks.
