Is Scilla 'siberica' invasive? #299486
Asked February 03, 2016, 1:30 PM EST
I was reading up on planting my siberica and noticed it was listed as invasive in certain parts of the U.S. I bought my bulbs locally here in Springfield, however I would like a second opinion before I plant them in my garden.
Thank you for your time.

Hi:
Scilla siberica is not considered invasive by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. The Native Plant Society of Oregon has a chapter in Eugene, the Emerald Chapter, and they have a list of noxious weeds of their own. They also do not list this plant. It is known to spread within gardens and presumably beyond garden boundaries, however, and evidently can spread aggressively enough in some regions to be a problem. Seed is the most likely method of unwanted spread, so if you are careful with removal of spent inflorescences, you should be able to control the plant.
