Insect Larva? #298875

Asked January 30, 2016, 2:23 PM EST

We have an onslaught of these little guys every year in the fall - late August to October or November. They just appear, and we have not been able to determine a source. For some reason they love to come into the house from outside. Would love to know what they are and what, if anything, we should do to get rid of them or if they should be left alone because they are something beneficial. They are definitely creepy little things! Nothing in the photos to show scale, unfortunately, but they are always about an inch long or so. The cup this one is in is just a small disposable drink cup.

Expert Response

The insect looks like soldier beetle larvae.  They are predators of ground dwelling insects and are beneficial. Sweep up and relocate outdoors.  You may need to do some caulking or weatherstripping in the area.  See our website for photos of the adult beetle http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/insects/predatory-beetles
