Cool weather weeds #296296

Asked January 10, 2016, 5:09 PM EST

Is it necessary to pull those awful cool weather weeds or will they just die off in the winter and springtime just brings a whole different, unrelated batch?

Expert Response

There are many types of broadleaf winter annual weeds.    You will have to identify the weeds you are referring to.  Control depends upon identification.  See our weed id link for more information. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lawns/lawn-weed-identification
If you do not have large areas, some weeds such as hairy bittercress can be pulled now to prevent weed seeds in the spring.   It is too late to use an herbicide now.  You can also control both with a preemergent applied in early to mid-September before it germinates. However, you would not be able to sow grass seed in the fall.
The best recommendation is to overseed in the fall to thicken up your stand of turf.  If you have small bare spots, the second best time to seed is in the spring.  http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG102%20Lawn%20Estab...                                                                                               mh
