Possible Fig Rust #296150

Asked January 09, 2016, 12:05 PM EST

Hi, I just bought a petite negra fig in a 4" pot. It's super small and doing somewhat okay, but it came with this orange-rusty stain on the leaves. Is it rust? Can rust be permanently cured? Most importantly, does fig rust harm any other species? I also have papaya trees and do not want to infect them. Thank you.

Expert Response

This looks more like insect damage to me. Most likely a beetle. Rust is normally a fungus, the picture didn't show the red color of rust. Your other plants are not likely to have any problems with either one, most commercial venders spray promptly, diseased or damaged plants don't sell as easy.
