Berks County Pennsylvania

Expert Response

A good general amendment to a garden is a top dressing of organic matter, such as aged compost, or arborist wood chips. Both of these can be spread up to three inches deep on the garden surface and allowed to naturally incorporate into the soil. Amendments should be applied to the entire garden, not to individual plants or planting holes. Beyond organic material, added amendments should be governed by the results of a soil test. In Pennsylvania you can acquire a Penn State test for around $10 from your county extension office, and many garden centers. The results will explain what should be added for your specific use.
